4 Simple Tips To Extend The Life Of Your Car Battery

There’s nothing worse than being stranded with a dead car battery, or for that matter paying for a new battery after a few months.

Luckily, there are tried-and-true ways to extend the life of your car’s battery. In this article, we will be going over some of the key ways to get more life out of your car’s battery.

1. Using Power When The Car’s Engine Isn’t On

One of the best things that you can do to minimize the stress that your car’s battery is forced to endure would be to avoid using your car battery while the car’s engine isn’t on. You want to minimize the usage of power while your engine is off because it is going to drain your battery considerably as it is going to be forced to work harder. This is especially true if you end up leaving your lights on for extended periods of time.

2. Battery Cleanliness

Another good thing that you can do to maximize the lifespan of your battery would be to keep the battery as clean as possible – especially the positive and negative terminals. You want to keep the battery itself clean from various things that can get on it including dirt, debris, and other sorts of grime.

Every few months we take steel wool and clean the terminals and battery compartment of our vehicles to make sure that the metal is free from any debris, thus ensuring that the battery is providing optimal power to your vehicles electrical system.

3. Extreme Temperatures

Another good thing that you can do to avoid dealing with significant battery damage or drain would be to avoid extreme heat or cold.  In these temperature ranges the battery and your vehicles electrical systems struggle to provide the necessary charge to keep running optimally.

While you can’t do much in a lot of instances, when you are able to, you can maximize the lifespan of your battery considerably by taking precautions. For one, you always want to try to park your vehicle in the shade when possible. Along with this, you will want to keep your car in the garage or covered in some way to avoid the battery from being exposed to extreme heat.

4. Avoid Starting Your Car Often

Your battery is forced to work the hardest every time you end up starting your vehicle. Therefore, you want to look to avoid starting your car and starting it up again before it had a chance to recharge. If you continue to turn on and turn off your car, you will end up draining your battery.

Overall, there is plenty that can be done to help improve your battery life in your vehicle. By following the tips above, you should be able to dramatically improve the overall lifespan of your battery.
