Don’t Wait For The Warning Light Before You Refuel

In the world of cars, there are many don’ts that other drivers or mechanics advise you not to do. For example, you shouldn’t fix your flat tire with a sealant. Another thing you shouldn’t do is to run your car on low gas levels.

Try to talk to more experienced drivers about cars and you are bound to hear someone say you shouldn’t let your gas level to reach about ¼ of the tank capacity

Many younger drivers feel that they are always busy that they even push refueling their car at a later time. Some don’t bother refueling until they see the low-gas warning light up. But, is it really bad to run your car on low gas?

The elders might be onto something here and they really know what they’re talking about.

It turns out that driving your car to its limits when it comes to fuel is bad for your car.

Fuel Pump Gets Easily Worn Out

The fuel pump’s purpose is to pump fuel from the tank to the engine. The gasoline also serves as a lubricant for it. When the gas is at low levels, the pump works harder and doesn’t get as much lubrication as it would when the gas level is adequate.

Consistently running the car on low fuel can prematurely wear out the fuel pump. It can become overstressed or overworked, which can result to heating. This doesn’t happen at once as it only happens if you consistently do it to your car.

Tank Crud

One of the reasons why the elders don’t advice to run on low fuel is because they believe that the base of the fuel tank contains rust and other sediments. This can be true for older models that still have metal fuel tanks. Most of today’s cars have plastic tanks because they are lighter. Newer models with metal tanks also don’t easily rust.

What’s more of a problem here is if you refuel at a gas station where the fuel storage tanks are low. At the bottom of the storage tanks of gas stations is where you may find water and crud. This can be refilled in your tank and you don’t want that.

To prevent this, watch out for fuel pumps that dispense gas at an unusually slow pace because they are likely to be connected to a storage tank that’s already low in fuel.

Risk Of Running Out Of Gas

If you make it a habit to refuel the minute you need it most, it is more likely that you’d find yourself out of fuel. That’s very inconvenient and you’d need to walk to a gas station to purchase some or have someone deliver you gas for your car.

The best thing to do is just to refuel regularly even if you’re not running low on gas.
